
For purchasers of natural flake graphite, spherical graphite, and expandable graphite, proper storage of bulk shipments upon arrival at the factory is the “last mile” in ensuring product quality. Natural flake graphite has a certain degree of hygroscopicity; if exposed to a humid environment for an extended period, it will absorb moisture from the air, causing the powder to agglomerate and clump, which affects its downstream dispersion performance and effectiveness. The storage environment for natural flake graphite should be kept dry, cool, and well-ventilated. It is recommended to maintain the relative humidity in the storage warehouse between 40% and 60%, with temperatures between 5°C and 35°C. In humid regions, warehouses must be equipped with dehumidification equipment, and humidity levels should be regularly monitored and adjusted to prevent natural flake graphite from absorbing moisture and deteriorating. Additionally, fine graphite dust in the air may form explosive mixtures; therefore, open flames must be prohibited in storage areas, and dust-explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting must be installed to prevent dust accumulation.
Natural flake graphite should not be placed directly on brick, earthen, or concrete floors during storage, as ground moisture can easily penetrate the packaging. The correct practice is to place the natural flake graphite on wooden or plastic pallets at least 20 centimeters above the ground, with a spacing of 25–30 centimeters between pallets to facilitate ventilation. Packaging should consist of an inner sealed bag (such as a polyethylene plastic bag) enclosed in an outer woven bag or bulk bag to ensure a secure seal. For natural flake graphite stored long-term, it is recommended to periodically inspect the packaging for signs of damage or moisture; if necessary, replace the packaging or add desiccant.
There are slight differences in storage requirements for different types of graphite products. Spherical graphite, due to its large specific surface area, is more sensitive to humidity and should be stored in an airtight container and protected from heavy pressure to prevent particle breakage. Expandable graphite must also be stored away from oxidizing agents, as its interlayer substances may react under certain conditions. For natural flake graphite stored for extended periods, it is recommended to periodically rotate the packaging—moving the product from the bottom to the top—to ensure more even moisture distribution and prevent prolonged compression and moisture absorption at the bottom.
Moisture-proof storage of natural flake graphite and its value-added products is a critical step in ensuring consistent quality and preventing downstream processing issues. By controlling warehouse temperature and humidity (temperature: 5–35°C; humidity: 40%–60%), storing products off the ground in sealed packaging, and implementing tailored management strategies for different product types, purchasers can effectively extend the shelf life and maintain the performance of graphite products.
